Empowering Innovation: OnRamp Hub Kansas and PWI Partner to Advance KC-46A Remote Start Systems

Our mission as the Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub: Kansas team is to create meaningful connections. Recently, our mission partners from the 22nd Wing Innovation Lab (22nd WIL) at McConnell Air Force Base partnered with a locally owned, small business which specializes in aerospace manufacturing to refine a prototype for a remote start system (RSS) for the KC-46A Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) called the APURSS.

With over 60 years’ experience providing engineering solutions and products for business and commercial aviation, PWI, Inc. (https://pwi-e.com/) has seen challenges in entering the market to support the DoD. Following our mission, the OnRamp Hub: Kansas team made the match based on PWI’s ability to provide end-to-end prototype development support from engineering to manufacturing, while also introducing PWI to the Defense market. Currently, PWI is refining the initial concept for the APURSS developed by the 22nd WIL and will deliver protypes that can be fielded in exercises to prove the concept, reducing cycle time to deploy the KC-46A Aerial Refueling Platform.

This is one of many connections that showcase our mission and the impact it makes on our community, society, and the warfighter.  In our ecosystem, this is what defines connections as meaningful.
